Institute of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Biochemical Pharmaceutics is based on two disciplines of Pharmacology and Microbe & Biochemical Pharmaceutics. It consists of four functional divisions: Lab of Cardio-Cerebral Vascular and Hepatic Pharmacology, Lab of Tumor and Endocrine Pharmacology, Lab of Biochemical Pharmaceutics, and Lab of neural Pharmacology. There are 12 faculties, including 6 professors, 3 associate professors, and 2 associate research fellows. The institute owns Zhejiang Provincial Key Discipline of Pharmacology, Zhejiang Provincial Key Discipline of Pharmacology of Chinese Traditional Medicine, and Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology of Chinese Traditional Medicine. It offers a Ph.D./M.S. Degree in Pharmacology and Microbe & Biochemical Pharmaceutics, and opens the positions for postdoctoral training and visiting scholars from all over the worlds.

Research
Research activities of the institute faculty include studies on:
 
Lab of Cardio-Cerebral Vascular and Hepatic Pharmacology

Currently the team consists of 1 professor, 2 associate professors, and 1 associate research fellow. 10 doctoral students and more than 10 graduated students.
 
1. Mechanism and drug R & D on Preventing and Treating Cardio-Cerebral Vascular and Hepatic Diseases.
The research areas mainly focus on cardio-vascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, liver disease and so on. The new targets of drug function are investigated and clarified, new products are developed.
2. Stem Cell Biology and Drug R & D on Regeneration Medicine.
The research areas mainly focus on the molecular events and the signaling transductions during the directional differentiation of embryonic stem cells regulated by drugs or small molecules. The inducing effects of drugs investigated are contributed to the regeneration medicine and tissue engineering.
 
3. Drug Toxicology
    
The research areas mainly focus on the toxic mechanisms of drugs based on system biology. It also set up GLP laboratory of drug safety in pre-clinical adverse reaction predicting using embryonic stem cell differentiation.
4. Mechanism and drug R & D on Chinese Traditional Medicine
The research areas mainly focus on the natural active components and lead compounds for preventing and treating diseases.
 
Lab of Tumor and Endocrine Pharmacology
Research activities of Institute faculty include studies on:
1. Molecular cancer pharmacology
2. Regulation of cancer cell differentiation
3. The molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in cancer cells, especially on the modulation of
    mitochondria and molecular signal transduction pathway by hypoxia;
4. The molecular pharmacological mechanisms of novel anticancer drug candidates;
5. Develop/research new cancer cell lines and new models for drug screening.
6. Anti-diabetic drugs screening and research on molecular mechanisms of anti-diabetic drug  
    candidates.
 
Lab of Biochemical Pharmaceutics
The lab established in 2003, has the Master of Science (M.S.) program in Microbiology & Biochemical Pharmacy, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in Pharmaceutical Analysis, which is offered jointly with Institute of Material Medica. There are two professors (one is a Guangbiao Scholar), one lecturer, two technicians, two post doctors, five Ph.D. candidates and five Master-degree candidates.
Since established in 2003, the lab has held two projects from Natural Science Foundation of China, one Key Technologies R & D project of Zhejiang Province, two major tender projects,, one general project, two projects from Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province, one project from the Educational Commission of Zhejiang Province and one from the Scientific and Technological Commission of Zhejiang Province. And Tthe lab has cooperated with two large pharmaceutical companies. In total, the lab has about 5 million yuan funding for research. There are more than 65 papers published, among which, 27 are included by SCI or EI. 16 patterns have been applied. Two first prizes of Science and Technology Innovation in Medicine and Healthcare of Zhejiang Province, one second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award have been gained. Two patterns have been transferred.
Research activities include studies on:
    1)    Describe the individual differences in the medicine therapy and disease development
            through    studying the genetic polymorphism of the drug metabolic enzymes.
    2)    The design and discovery of new biotech drugs by genetic recombinant technology
