In order to strengthen the academic capacity and competitiveness of Chinese higher education institutions and to give an impetus to the training of key teachers and scholars in these institutions, the Ministry of Education has decided to work with Hong Kong patriotic entrepreneur Mr. Li Ka-shing and Cheung Kong Infrastructures Holdings Limited to jointly launch and sponsor the Cheung Kong Scholars Program. The program is also aimed at attracting and selecting outstanding young and middle-aged scholars, and helping them become world-class academic leaders so as to attain and surpass or maintain the advanced world levels in their disciplines.

Under the program, chair professorship will be established in state-prioritized disciplines in Chinese higher education institutions. With responsibilities and qualifications of appointment clearly defined, universities and colleges, authorized to appoint chair professors, will open up selection processes to scholars both at home and abroad. Fair competition among candidates, impartial selection of chair professors, strict proficiency assessment and dynamic administration of chair professors are to be practiced.

The candidates competing for chair professorships will be nominated by their host institutions and selected by academic experts. The selected candidates will be appointed by their host institutions and presented with an allowance during their tenure of chair professorship.

The disciplines for the establishment of chair professorships and the candidates for chair professors must be examined and appraised by the Academic Appraisal Committee comprising renowned experts both at home and abroad.
