Introduction

The Institute of Pharmaceutics, as one branch of the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhejiang University, is a modern pharmaceutics and technical research center. Our research arenas were focused on Drug Formulations, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Engineering. We also take responsibilities for training senior pharmaceutics students and professionals. Our institute was conferred as master’s degree awarding unit in 1991 and PhD degree awarding unit in 2004 by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The National Secondary Lab for Chinese Traditional Medicine was built in this institute. The Institute of Pharmaceutics has an innovative, highly-qualified research team, with 12 faculty members including 8 professors, 1 associate professor and 3 lecturers. The faculties serve as experts for the Center for Drug Evaluation, SFDA, and commissioners for the Committee of Pharmaceutics, Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. The members also serve as associate editor/editor Committee of "Pharmaceutical Journal", "Journal of Chinese Medicine", "Modern Applied Pharmacy" and "Journal of Pediatric Medicine", etc. Noting that two faculties were granted with “Zhejiang New Century 151 Talent Project”.

Our institute has gained fruitful achievements in fundamental research, innovative technique research, industrial development and technical services. We've undertaken more than 70 research projects, with 28 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 from the National 863 Program, 1 sub-project of the National 973 Program, 38 provincial or ministry level projects. 18 new formulations for provincial pharmaceutical companies were developed by the institute. The institute received 3 National Drug Certificate independently and participated in the application of 12 National Drug Certificate. The institute was granted with 36 national patents, nearly 300 articles were published, of which more than 170 articles were indexed by SCI. The institute also edited 3 scientific books and textbooks, and co-edited 7 books.

Our institute has modernized facilities, such as PT4000 homogenizer, high pressure homogenization machine, freeze dryer, spray dryer, suspended granulator, step by granulating machines, tablet machines. The institute also equipped with advanced separation, detection and evaluation instruments, e.g., high-speed centrifuges, ultra-filter, dynamic light scattering and Zeta potential analyzer, gel permeation chromatograph, carbon dioxide fluid instrument, temperature incubator, digital fluorescent inverted microscope, high performance liquid chromatograph and dissolution tester, with a total value more than 5 million RMB in fixed assets.

Research interests and advanced technologies

The institute focuses on sustained-release drug formulations and nano-delivery systems for fundermental research and industrial development, and conducts in-depth study of molecular biology for pharmaceutical research.

1. Sustained and controlled release drug formulations:

(1) Oral osmotic pump tablets: Modified pore forming and molding tech for drug release, Osmotic pump tablets for R&D of water insoluble drugs.

(2) Microsphere formulations: Oral & intravenous administrated microspheres for sustained release of biomacromolecular drugs.

(3) Oral solid lipid microparticles: Lipid materials such as stearic acid, glycerin monostearate, etc., were used to prepare lipid microparticles and used as drug carriers for constant drug release.

(4) Transdermal drug delivery systems: A variety of drugs (including Chinese traditional medicine, as well as peptides) were explored for percutaneous administration. Newly alcohol plastid transdermal drug delivery systems, percutaneous iontophoresis, electroporation studies, percutaneous vaccines were also elaborately carried out.

2. Nano Drug (Gene) Delivery System:

(1) Nano-drug formulations: Oral self-emulsification system, Oral lymphatic targeting of solid lipid nanoparticles to enhance oral bioavailability, Injection targeted DDS based on liposomes and microemulsion.

(2) Nanoparticle/micelle DDS: Design and synthesis of novel amphiphilic polymers (Polyphosphazenes, chitosan derivatives, cyclodextrin derivatives), and targeting micellar delivery systems.

(3) Nano-carriers and non-viral gene transfection systems: Newly low toxic and highly efficient gene vector, 3D transfection systems with applications on stem cells and dendritic cells.

3. Molecular pharmacology/pharmaceutics:

Molecular biology and advanced experimental techniques were combined in the research at molecular and cellular levels. Drug absorption, targeting mechanism and influence factors were used for the guidance of drug carriers design in DDS, prescription screening and process optimization.
