The Institute of Drug Delivery of Zhejiang University was established on the College of Pharmaceutic Sciences of Zhejiang University in 2001. To date, the institute has developed a research and development center of pharmaceutical formulation science and pharmaceutical engineering. The institute focuses on the construction of platforms for both basic research and translation development and has established platforms such as the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Preparation Technology, the Pharmaceutical Preparation Research Platform of the Special Injury Prevention and Control Drug Key Laboratory, and three School Enterprise Joint R & D Centers.

The institute has 41 faculty members, including 12 professors and research fellows and four associate professors. One faculty member was selected as the 2020 Global Highly Cited Scholar (interdisciplinary field), and two faculty members were consecutively listed as “China Highly Cited Scholar” by ELSEVIER. In addition, five professors serve as national drug review experts, the Vice Chairman of Pharmacy Committee of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, and Vice Chairman of Bioparticle Committee of Chinese Society of Particuology. Also, the faculty members serve as associate editors or editorial board members of academic journals, including Science Advances, Nano Research, and Journal of Controlled Release. Awards obtained by faculty members include Sloan Research Fellowship, National Talent Program Award, and National Youth Talent Programs Award.

The institute has four major research fields: 1) Biological pharmaceutics, mainly focusing on developing cell delivery systems and transdermal drug delivery systems; 2) Controlled drug delivery, mainly focusing on developing delivery systems for targeted drug delivery, oral drug delivery, and the application and industrialization of new formulation technologies; 3) Pharmaceutical materials and drug delivery, mainly focusing on the preparation and study of functional materials for medicine and molecular imaging; 4) Bioresponsive drug delivery Lab, mainly focusing on the development and translation of protein drug delivery systems, immunotherapeutic formulations, and cell therapy strategies.

In recent years, the institute has achieved fruitful research results in basic scientific research, translation development, and technical services. It has undertaken more than 40 national-level projects. The institute has been authorized with 15 national new drug certificates and more than 100 domestic and foreign invention patents and rewarded with more than ten national, provincial and ministerial science and technology honors.
